With obesity on the rise with its associated health problems, many are turning to weight loss “shortcuts.” But there is truly no substitute for lifestyle changes such as reducing calories and increasing physical activity. Any other plan is doomed for long-term failure. One of these “shortcuts” was recently withdrawn from the market. Hydroxycut, a highly advertised product was voluntarily removed from the market by its manufacturers due to associated health problems. “Reports of adverse effects include liver damage, elevated liver enzymes (which indicates potential liver damage) and liver damage requiring a transplant. A 19-year-old man died after using Hydroxycut." The death occurred in 2007 and was reported to the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the end of March 2009. Other reported health problems include cardiovascular problems, seizures, and serious muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) that can cause kidney failure.” (WebMD Health News – May 1, 2009) So if you are struggling with your weight remember the promise, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not,” (Jer. 33:3) and follow God's instructions for better health!
HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT & PREVENT TYPE 2 DIABETES!
In a study conducted among Seventh-day Adventist in North America, Adventist Health Study-2 conducted from 2002 to 2006, it was reported that diet had a great impact on weight gain and diabetes. When it came to the weight of members based on their dietary habits, “Vegans had the lowest BMI (23.6 kg/m2). There was a progressive increase in BMI with increased content of animal products in the diet: 25.7 kg/m2in lacto-ovo vegetarians, 26.3 kg/m2in pesco-vegetarians (fish eaters), 27.3 kg/m2in semi-vegetarians, and 28.8 kg/m2in nonvegetarians. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes also increased with increasing consumption of animal products: 2.9% for the vegan diet, 3.2% for the lacto-ovo diet, 4.8% for the pesco-vegetarian diet, 6.1% for the semi-vegetarian diet, and 7.6% for the non vegetarian diet.” A healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) is between 20-25 kg/m2). Remember the counsel, “The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating,” (CD 386.4) and follow the best dietary plan know to man given by our Creator, for better health!
EARLY TO BED BENEFITS
We have all heard the adage, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!” A study whose findings were reported at the American College of Cardiology’s 58th Annual Scientific Sessions, March 30, 2009 in Orlando, FL adds validity to this old proverb. Yu Misao, MD, of the Misao Health Clinic in Gifu, Japan reported that men who went to bed after midnight had more arterial stiffening, an early form of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, which leads to heart attacks. Several large studies have linked chronic sleep loss to, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other health problems, but this is the first to link bedtime to heart disease. So why not follow the Bible instructions found in Psalms 127:2, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” So get to bed early, for better health!
The number of youth who are hooked on drug, alcohol and tobacco is alarming. Jails and prisons are full of those that have been overcome by these habits. But what can be done? Consider the following quotation and seek, by the grace of God to do it. “There would soon be little necessity for temperance crusades if in the youth who form and fashion society, right principles in regard to temperance could be implanted. Let parents begin a crusade against intemperance at their own firesides, in the principles they teach their children to follow from infancy, and they may hope for success. (Ministry of Healing 334)
